People with an AST reading under 14 U/L had a 65% higher chance of an early-onset cancer diagnosis. Those with ALT under 14 U/L had a 68% higher chance. Both comparisons were measured against people with enzyme levels between 14 and 29 U/L, a range doctors normally consider healthy.

AST and ALT are enzymes made mostly in the liver. Doctors have used them for decades to check liver health. Normally, a low reading is nothing to worry about. This isn’t the first time liver enzymes have shown up in cancer research. A large United Kingdom Biobank study tracking thousands of adults over time found that lower circulating levels of ALT, AST, and related liver markers were linked to higher colorectal cancer risk across the whole population, not just younger patients. Comparing the highest and lowest enzyme groups produced a risk ratio of roughly 0.6, meaning higher enzymes tracked with meaningfully lower cancer rates.

Colorectal cancer in adults under 50 has been climbing for years, and doctors still don’t have a single clear reason why.
