What Scientists Are Warning About Sugary and Diet Drinks

Global cancer experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, recently ranked the artificial sweetener aspartame as Group 2B, meaning it is “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” They based this label on limited evidence that drinks with aspartame may raise risk for a type of liver cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma. In parallel, the World Health Organization has urged people not to use non-sugar sweeteners for weight control because they do not help long-term weight loss and are linked to higher risks of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Other studies focus on regular sugar-sweetened drinks like soda and sweetened juices. One large analysis found about an 18 percent higher overall cancer risk for every 100 milliliters per day of sugary drinks a person consumed. A separate study reported women who drank at least one sugar-sweetened beverage daily had a 78 percent higher risk of liver cancer, and more sugary drinks were tied to greater deaths from chronic liver disease. The European Code against Cancer now directly advises people to avoid sugary drinks because evidence links them to higher pancreatic cancer risk.

Evidence That Soft Drinks Raise Cancer and Disease Risks

Researchers studying people across 10 European countries found that drinking at least one glass of sugar-sweetened soft drink per day was linked to more deaths from digestive diseases. Another pooled analysis of several cohorts showed men who consumed at least 375 milliliters of sugar-sweetened beverages daily had a 56 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer compared to men who did not drink them. These findings worry many Americans who already feel the system let sugary drink makers flood schools, gas stations, and homes while cancer, liver disease, and obesity climbed.

Importantly, one key liver cancer study found clear associations for sugar-sweetened drinks, but not for diet beverages, suggesting that added sugar may be a stronger driver of liver cancer and liver-related deaths than artificial sweeteners. That fits with broader evidence that heavy sugar intake promotes obesity, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation, all of which raise several cancer risks. For citizens who blame past “woke” health messaging or corporate globalism for ignoring basic nutrition, these numbers can look like fresh proof that profit came before people.

Why Regulators Still Say Aspartame Is Safe Within Limits

Even with the new Group 2B label from cancer researchers, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives, working with the World Health Organization, reviewed the same evidence and concluded that links between aspartame and cancer in humans are “not convincing.” The committee kept the acceptable daily intake at 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, saying aspartame does not pose a health concern when people stay below that level. For most people, that would mean drinking roughly nine to fourteen cans of diet soda a day before crossing the limit, making typical consumption appear safe.

Major agencies including the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority have also re-examined data and maintain that aspartame is safe under current rules. A National Cancer Institute fact sheet notes that decades of animal and human research have not found a clear mechanism by which aspartame could cause cancer, and large cohort studies often show no consistent cancer pattern. A recent umbrella review of many meta-analyses concluded there is only weak evidence that artificially sweetened beverages are linked to cancer or cancer death, and in some measures no significant association at all.

Confusing Messages, Industry Power, and Public Distrust

The clash between hazard-focused cancer agencies and risk-focused food regulators leaves ordinary people caught in the middle: one arm of the global health system says a common sweetener is “possibly carcinogenic,” while others say the same chemical is safe within limits, and both cite science. Beverage giants like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo benefit from this gray zone, since clear labels tying their core products to cancer could threaten tens of billions in annual revenue. Reports that these companies fund research and lobbying to shape safety narratives only deepen worries that “deep state” elites protect corporate interests more than public health.

At the same time, social media algorithms push fear-based videos that claim, often without solid citations, that “soda causes cancer” or “diet drinks are toxic,” while slower, more nuanced explanations from mainstream scientists and regulators draw less attention. This mix of scary headlines, soft regulatory language, and industry spin feeds frustration on both left and right. For now, the clearest point of agreement in the research is simple: cutting back on sugar-sweetened drinks lowers well-documented risks like obesity, diabetes, and liver disease, and may also reduce certain cancer risks, even as the jury remains out on whether diet drinks themselves directly cause cancer.
