Reporting on the study said the results raise concerns about uniforms carrying microbes from hospitals into homes and back again.

The study’s main concern is simple. Healthcare uniforms can act as carriers, or fomites, for microbes. If the wash does not clean them well enough, bacteria can survive on fabric or inside machine biofilms. The researchers said this creates a possible path for hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance, which is why they called for stronger laundering rules and better validation of home washing settings.

Why Laundry Settings Matter

Temperature and cycle length are at the center of the debate. One older study found that a domestic wash at 60°C for 10 minutes could decontaminate hospital uniforms under test conditions. Other guidance says hot-water laundering at 71°C for 25 minutes, or bleach at lower temperatures, gives stronger microbial reduction. The newer review says many home machines do not reliably reach the levels needed for safe cleaning.

That gap helps explain why the subject keeps coming back. Some reviews say the evidence does not yet prove that home laundering clearly spreads infections in real-world settings, and they note that laundering can remove or kill many organisms. But newer work points to specific risks, including biofilm in machines, lower-performance rapid cycles, and a higher bacterial load on home-washed uniforms than on hospital-laundered items.

What the Broader Evidence Says

The literature does not speak with one voice. Older reviews argued that uniforms were not proven to be a major route for infection spread and found no strong evidence that home laundering was worse than industrial laundering. Other studies and reviews, however, found that some bacteria can survive domestic washing, that staff sometimes wash uniforms below the recommended temperature, and that home laundering can leave households open to cross-contamination.

That mix of findings leaves healthcare systems with a practical problem. Workers still need clean uniforms, but families also do not want those clothes bringing contamination home. The latest study’s message is not that every home wash fails. It is that current domestic laundering practice may be uneven, and that hospitals and health leaders may need clearer rules if they want to reduce risk without relying on guesswork.
